Muac XV

The Museum of Contemporary Art at the National University in Mexico City (MUAC) turned 15 on November 26, 2023.

The 15th anniversary is an important coming of age ritual in the tradition of Mexico. It is the moment when we are welcomed into society and it is celebrated with a large party and a fabulous, exuberant dance where many elegant and fabulous people known as chambelanes will dance with the glamorous fifteen year old in a wild choreography they have all been practicing for months.

It seemed perfectly appropriate that this outstanding cultural institution should be acknowledged into the Mexico City Hall of Architectural Fame in a ritual dance where artists, public and museum staff performed as chambelanes honouring the coming of age of this excellent cultural landmark, so well-known and loved.

it was a delight to add a specially designed new building to my piece “If I were a building” (2019) for the occasion featuring the MUAC with its elegant Tamayo sculpture as a headdress.

The photographs are by the talented Carlos Somonte.
